Daring and Suffering: A History of the Andrews Railroad Raid into Georgia in 1862
Publication: New York: The War Publishing Company, 1887. Later printing.
Notes: The title continues: "A full and accurate account of the secret journey into the heart of the Confederacy, the capture of a railway train in a Confederate camp, the terrible chase that followed, and the subsequent fortunes of the leader and his party."
An expanded and rewritten account of a daring Union mission to capture a Confederate locomotive and use it to destroy train tracks and infrastructure. The survivors, including the author, were the first recipients of the Medal of Honor. Pittenger published his first account in 1863; he revised the book several times, drawing on archival sources after the war. The book was published as Capturing a Locomotive in 1881 and again as The Great Locomotive Chase in 1889. This is the first publication of this intermediate version, under the original title.
