Notes: A scarce offprint from one of the first African Americans to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics. This short paper expands on a work by F. A. Ross "in time series analysis where straight lines and more complex curves are fitted as secular trends."
This is the third of three mathematical papers Pierce published after obtaining his Ph.D. He published his best-known work, Negro Business and Business Education in 1947. He had a long career in education, as chair of the Math department at Atlanta University and then at Texas State College for Negroes (Texas Southern University) where he ultimately was elected president of the university.
