Notes: A scarce offprint from one of the first African Americans to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics. The second of two papers published by Pierce based on his dissertation.
Pierce published his best-known work, Negro Business and Business Education in 1947. He had a long career in education, as chair of the Math department at Atlanta University and then at Texas State College for Negroes (Texas Southern University) where he ultimately was elected president of the university.
