Second Printing Inscribed to a Fellow Writer

Naked in Garden Hills

Publication: New York: William Morrow and Company, 1969. Second Printing.

Notes: The author's second novel.

212 pages.

Edition + Condition: Second printing (with two dots on the copyright page; in the correct dust jacket with reviews of The Gospel Singer on the rear panel of the jacket). A near fine copy (minor wear to the bottom of the boards) in a very good dust jacket that is a touch faded at the spine and somewhat tanned on the back panel. This copy is inscribed to a fellow member of the Bread Loaf faculty, the future Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize–winning poet William Meredith: "Bread Loaf 1969. For Bill Meredith, With affection and admiration. I hope all that has begun at Bread Loaf will go on into all the years ahead. Harry."

Crews taught at the Bread Loaf Writer's Conference each August for several years in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Crews was a generous signer of books, but copies of his work inscribed to other writers are very uncommon, as are books signed in the 1960s. Most of Crews's books were signed much later.
