Great Vietnam War Association Copy
Public Affairs: The Military and the Media, 1962–1968 (United States Army in Vietnam)
Publication: Washington, DC: Center of Military History, United States Army, 1988. First Edition.
Notes: The definitive book on the subject, with a full-page inscription to a journalist Hammond knew during the war. Hammond's "history of public affairs in Vietnam not only is a major scholarly accomplishment but is also based on records that were subsequently lost"—Thomas Crosbie, The Political Army. A second volume covered the later years of the war.
xvi, 413, [3:blank] pages.
Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing, stated). A near fine copy in a near fine dust jacket (corners bumped). With a full-page inscription to Neil Sheehan, who obtained the Pentagon Papers as a reporter for the New York Times and later won a Pulitzer Prize for his Vietnam book, A Bright and Shining Lie. Hammond is thanked in the acknowledgements of that book; Sheehan appears 11 times in the index of this one.
The long inscription describes how Sheehan "blocked [Hammond] up against a wall" and encouraged him to keep working on this book, saying, "There are bastards everywhere and they never last. Don't let them stop you."
A great Vietnam association.
