Notes: A collection of essays about the authors of notable works in the shooting literature, of which Evans was one of the leading exponents in the second half of the twentieth century.

He self-published limited editions of his essays, mostly writing about upland shooting of grouse, dogs from his acclaimed line of English Setters, and his wife, Kay, who accompanied him on almost every hunt but only shot birds with her camera.

Foreword by Neil Sheehan, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for A Bright and Shining Lie. Illustrated with halftone photographs by LeJay Graffious. [12], 204 pages. Bound in coarse black cloth, stamped in gilt on the spine and front board. In a tan/gray paper-covered slipcase.

Limited to 990 numbered copies. Evans typically signed the books when he received orders for them.

Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing). The spine is a bit faded, as usual; the slipcase is very good, with a few dents and light wear. Not issued in a dust jacket.

This is Neil Sheehan's copy and it has his standard number, 942. The book is inscribed, "For Neil Sheehan—The man whose words stay with you like the sound of the autumn wind in your mind is a writer. George Bird Evans & Kay. Old Hemlock, October 1983." One of the better association copies for this title.

Neil and his wife Susan, who also won a Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction, had a rural retreat, Wrong Way Flowing River Farm, at the headwaters of the Youghiogheny River, about 30 miles from the Evans' homestead, Old Hemlock. Evans's manuscript "Shooting Notes" for 1982 at West Virginia University includes an account of hunting with Sheehan on October 28, 1982.
