Illustrated from drawings by the author, who worked as a commercial illustrator before he turned to writing. [10], 182 pages. Bound in a tannish coated book cloth with a leather pattern, stamped in gilt on the spine and front board. In a brown paper-covered slipcase.

Limited to 1500 numbered copies. Evans typically signed the books when he received orders for them.

Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing). A fine copy in a near fine slipcase. Not issued in a dust jacket.

This is Neil Sheehan's copy and it has his standard number, 942. The book is inscribed, "For Neil Sheehan—Days in the coverts of our minds. George Bird Evans. Old Hemlock November 1986."

A nice association copy. Neil Sheehan wrote the foreword to Evans's book Opus 10. He won a Pulitzer Prize for A Bright and Shining Lie. Neil and his wife Susan, who also won a Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction, had a rural retreat, Wrong Way Flowing River Farm, at the headwaters of the Youghiogheny River, about 30 miles from the Evans' homestead, Old Hemlock. Evans's manuscript "Shooting Notes" for 1982 at West Virginia University includes an account of hunting with Sheehan on October 28, 1982.
