Notes: A nice association copy of McGuane’s first novel, inscribed to his new editor, shortly before Farrar, Straus & Giroux reissued the book.
McGuane's first book, a darkly comic novel set in a fishing club in Michigan. "I recognize these are not just pastimes, they're cultural rituals, and they are rituals I know something about, so they make a good staging area to talk about other things," McGuane said about the novel shortly before it was reissued.
He also explained why he changed publishers to Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, where Michael di Capua would edit his next three books. "Strangely enough, the book's still in demand. And Simon and Schuster are into doing big, schlock novels. They're not interested in doing anything that sells four or five thousand in a year."
