Notes: Lovecraft was one of the most prolific literary letter writers of the 20th century, having written tens of thousands of letters. This second volume of selected and excerpted letters covers his last year in New York, the breakup of his marriage, and the writing of The Call of Cthulhu, his most influential short story.

Introduction by August Derleth and Donald Wandrei. 2482 copies printed. xxiv, 360 pages plus inserted halftone plates of photographs.

Edition + Condition: First printing ($7.50 price on front jacket flap; colophon stating 2500 copies printed; no ISBN on the copyright page). Fine and tight in a near fine dust jacket with minor edge wear and no fading to the spine lettering. With the Lovecraft-inspired letterpress bookplate of the James Strand estate on the front pastedown.

This copy came from the important Arkham House collection assembled by James Strand of Portland, Oregon. After his death, in August 2023, his house was looted and most of his books were stolen. Some were subsequently recovered by the FBI. This book was among those not taken by thieves
