Notes: The third volume in the quintet of novels that began with A Wrinkle in Time, inscribed to literary friends. This book won the National Book Award for children's literature in paperback (a short-lived prize category).
Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing stated). The edge of the page block is spotted, thus good to very good in a very good jacket with wear along the top edge. This copy is inscribed to the short-story writer Paul Darcy Boles and his wife Dorothy. "For Paul & Dorothy, with ananda—Madeleine." Ananda is the Sanskrit word for bliss, a concept in the novel.
Laid into this copy is a typed postcard, signed by L'Engle, to Dorothy. It is dated 10/12/86 and signed "Madeleine."
When L'Engle met Boles is not known to your cataloguer. In 1982, two years before Boles died, they taught at a writing workshop together.
