Very nicely inscribed with a drawing of a burglar to Stephen Jay Gould, referencing Gould's love of baseball: "February 25, 1992, to Stephen Jay Gould [drawing] Crime pays but not in baseball. David Macaulay."
Gould was one of the leading evolutionary theorisst of his era, a popular science writer, and a big baseball fan.
