Notes: Black-and-white photograph. Image 14 by 18 inches on 20-by-16-inch paper. This photograph was most likely taken in 1951, during Mantle's rookie year, when the photographer, Osvaldo Salas, was active taking pictures of the New York Yankees. Salas was a Cuban exilie photographer who was active in New York during the 1950s, before he returned to the island after Fidel Castro's forces successfully overthrew the governent.
The print was commissioned by Peter Howard of Serendipity Books, in Berkeley, who somehow obtained the negative and had three (or maybe five--the records are not clear) exhibition quality prints made by Photolab, also in Berkeley. The edition was 5 prints.
