Notes: 8-by-10-inch black-and-white photograph (image 6 by 8 inches). Olsen is best known for her book, Tell Me a Riddle. In recent years, she has become a symbol of the hardships many women writers face when trying to juggle family and money and time to write.
Edition + Condition: A fine photograph, inscribed twice by Olsen to the bookseller Peter B. Howard of Serendipity Books, who apparently appraised or brokered her papers. The longer of the two inscriptions, in very small cursive, read, "For Peter Howard, who knows better than anyone except me the mess my papers are in—and other such matters—salute to you Peter—may the best be for you and there you love—May we meet again. Tille."
